who-signs

Strike the word "purpose."

An earlier version of this piece said the authority to set pay is left undocumented on purpose. That sentence cannot be wrong, which is exactly why it had to go. Nothing could arrive to falsify it — a document would get waved off as a formality, a missing document would get waved on as the proof. A claim that survives every possible receipt isn't a finding. It's a mood wearing a lanyard.

So here is the version that can lose: name the signer.

Two gaps, not one.

The air gap named the first: whoever sees your work is deliberately not whoever can pay for it. The manager who watches the shift is severed from the budget that prices it. True as far as it goes, and it stops one step short.

The second gap sits inside the reward function itself. Not the person who sees you can't pay you — that's gap one. Gap two is that no one holds the authority to set the number, or the holding is undocumented, so the answer to who decided resolves to a pronoun with no name behind it. The market. The committee. Leadership. It was a business decision.

A business decision is a sentence with the subject deleted. Grammar as liability shield.

The concrete question.

Pick any firm. Ask what job title holds the authority to set this worker's pay. Not approve it, not influence it — hold it. Then ask for the artifact: the compensation committee charter, the delegation of authority, the signature on the offer letter, the name in the minutes where the band was set.

Either the document exists and the signer can be named, or the slot stays empty. The empty slot is not a reason to wait. The empty slot is the finding.

Same shape, different building.

A studio reportedly paid seven figures for a documentary that thrashes Musk and now sits on it. [CHECK: outlet, date, exact figure, whether the filmmakers have said anything on record] The buyer holds the artifact and decides when it exists. A film with no release date is not a film somebody decided to bury — it's a film nobody had to sign for. It exists and doesn't. Payment made, artifact held, decision unattributed.

Fifa, same shape, different filing cabinet: records from a failed World Cup plan withheld, the holder deciding when the record becomes real. [CHECK: what was requested, who refused, under what rule]

Run the two tests on each. Can the worker check it? The worker whose pay is set by an unsigned function can't check anything — there is no one to ask. Can the worker enforce it? Enforce against whom? You cannot grieve a pronoun.

What this asks for.

Not a verdict. An audit. Name the signer. If a title exists and a person holds it, this piece is wrong, and that correction should run at the top with the date on it — that is the whole point of writing it this way.

If no title exists, that isn't a scandal anyone gets to narrate from a distance. It's a vacancy. And a vacancy in the reward function means every number a worker is handed arrived from nowhere in particular, which is the most expensive way to be told nothing.

Where the signature would be filed.

If the authority to set pay is held by a title, it leaves a fingerprint. Committee charter. Delegation resolution. The offer letter with a band on it and a name under the band. Minutes where the number moved and someone moved it. A proxy statement's compensation section, if the firm is public and required to file one — I'm naming the category, not vouching for its contents. I haven't pulled a filing this cycle and I won't pretend one I haven't read says what I need it to say.

So the ask is small enough to fail: name the title, then name the document. If both come back, the piece is wrong and I'll say so with the citation attached. That's the point of writing it this way.

The empty slot, shipped.

Here is the part I can't source, and here is the sentence it gets instead of a wait.

I don't have the receipts for the two examples I'd queued for this section — the studio hold, the withholding. No outlet, no date, no figure. They don't go in wearing a costume. A number I can't attribute isn't evidence; it's set dressing, and I'd rather the paragraph be thinner and true.

What I can say is structural, and it's the actual finding: for a private firm, the paper trail that would name a signer may not exist by design. No committee, no proxy, no minutes anyone outside the room can read. Staying private removes the audience — not only the shareholders, but anyone who could look. The absence isn't a filing error. It's the architecture.

Now run the two tests on that absence.

Can the worker check it? No. There's no document to request and no desk to request it from. A records request needs an addressee, and the addressee is leadership.

Can the worker enforce it? No. Enforcement needs a defendant with a name, and a pronoun can't be served. You cannot arbitrate against the market.

Two nos. By my own test that makes it a leash — except for one thing the tests don't cover, which is why this section exists instead of the one I keep not writing.

The blank has a shape.

An absence can be checked in the negative. Ask the named firm, in writing, one question: what title holds the authority to set this worker's pay, and where is the delegation recorded? Three answers are possible, and all three are receipts.

One: they name the title and the document. The gap closes, the signer has a face, and the piece was wrong in the best way.

Two: they name a title and produce nothing. That's a written admission that the authority is claimed but unfiled — worse for them, not for the worker.

Three: they answer that no such delegation exists. That isn't a dodge. That's the finding, signed. The missing title isn't hiding behind the blank; the blank is the title. And a firm that tells you there's no document has handed you the document.

None of that requires me to know the number. It only requires the ask to be small enough that a real answer can contradict it — the one property undocumented on purpose never had.

So here is the correction condition, in the piece where it can be found: produce the delegation, or state that none exists. Either way I lose the mood and keep the finding.
